At SurfMed, we have the opportunity to work with case managers across Florida who dedicate their careers to helping patients and families get the care and resources they need. Through our Case Manager Spotlight, we want to introduce some of the professionals behind that work and share their stories.
This month, we are highlighting Sarah Burrows, a Humana case manager serving members in Florida.
Sarah brings an incredible 30 years of case management experience to her work, including the past four and a half years with Humana.
Today, Sarah calls Flagler County home, but her story began in North Carolina, where she attended Campbell University and grew up near the beach. So when she moved to Florida eight and a half years ago with plans to eventually retire here, life near the Florida coast felt familiar.
“I’m totally a beach person,” Sarah said. “I grew up in a beach area, and I live near the beach now.”
Finding Resources When Resources Are Limited
For Sarah, case management is ultimately about solving problems for people. That can be especially challenging in an area where certain services and resources may be limited.
“The most challenging part of my job is making sure I have enough resources in our area, whether that's home care nurses and aides, food or other services,” Sarah said.
That means sometimes looking beyond the obvious solution.
“We always have to kind of look outside the box to find resources in addition to the ones that we already have through the different companies.”
Sarah would also like to see greater flexibility within the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care program when it comes to providing home health services, something she believes could make a meaningful difference for members in areas where resources can be harder to access.
Helping People Remain at Home
Those challenges also lead directly to what Sarah finds most rewarding about her career: helping people remain in their communities and homes for as long as possible.
“Finding services for our members that can keep them in the community as long as possible, in a home setting rather than having to go to skilled nursing, is the most rewarding part,” she said. “I get to help people stay where they want, and I get to make them happy.”
After three decades in case management, that desire to improve people's lives remains at the center of Sarah's work.
“I like to make lives better for individuals who are unable to provide for their own needs,” Sarah said. “I like to be a resource to make their lives better.”
Why Humana?
Sarah has spent the past four and a half years with Humana, and she points to the organization's leadership and approach to its members as reasons she continues to enjoy being part of the team.
“I like the leadership, I like the quality of care that we provide, and I feel that we're very reliable,” she said. “We meet the needs of our members.”
For Sarah, case management isn't simply about coordinating a service. It's about finding solutions, overcoming gaps in available resources and helping people maintain their independence and quality of life.
After 30 years, that mission continues to motivate her every day.
Thank you, Sarah, for taking a few minutes to speak with us and, more importantly, for the work you continue to do for members and families throughout your community.
Know a case manager we should feature next? We would love to hear their story.
