Fifty years ago, The Endless Summer, the iconic documentary about surfers traveling the world in search of the perfect wave, captured the spirit of adventure, discovery and connection.
Recently, during a conversation with the SurfMed team, the film came to mind as we reflected on our own version of an “Endless Summer.” Ours didn’t involve traveling the world in search of waves, but it certainly involved plenty of travel—reaching nearly every corner of Florida.
Since June, the SurfMed team has made a concerted effort to connect directly with case managers, health plans, healthcare professionals and Medicaid members throughout the state.
Connecting Across the Sunshine State
Our team attended conferences and events hosted by organizations across the healthcare continuum, including the Florida Alliance of Home Care Services, Florida Assisted Living Association, Home Care Association of Florida, American Case Management Association, Florida Council on Aging, Private Care Association and Home and Community Based Services.
Beyond conferences, SurfMed participated in disability awareness and resource events in communities across Florida. We hosted Lunch & Learns, attended case manager and social worker appreciation events, participated in association meetings and continued building relationships through networking and community outreach.
It required a significant investment of time and resources, but what we gained was even more valuable.
More Than Showing Up—It’s About Listening
Every conversation gives us an opportunity to better understand the people we serve.
Case managers shared their needs, challenges and suggestions for improving our processes. We also heard firsthand about what's working well for members and where SurfMed can continue to improve.
These events aren't simply opportunities for us to introduce SurfMed or talk about our services. They are opportunities to listen.
And we do.
Our team returned from this summer's travels with new relationships, great memories, valuable feedback and, most importantly, actionable ideas that can help us better support case managers and the members they serve.
The Journey Continues
With Labor Day behind us, the pace of summer travel may finally be slowing down, but the work that came from those conversations is just beginning.
Much like the surfers in The Endless Summer, we spent the season exploring new places, meeting new people and building relationships along the way.
We may not have been searching for the perfect wave, but we were searching for something equally important: new ways to connect, listen and provide better support to the healthcare professionals and members who depend on us.
And that makes SurfMed’s “Endless Summer” a journey well worth taking
