In transportation circles, a cloverleaf is created when two major highways cross and a series of looping entrance and exit ramps connects them. From above, those four loops resemble the leaves of a clover.
When Miami-Dade County was younger, a large cloverleaf was built where I-95 met Highway 826. It was such an important interchange that businesses and communities in the surrounding area adopted the Cloverleaf name.
But South Florida kept growing.
More roads were connected. Highway 441, the Florida Turnpike, Highway 928 and others became part of an increasingly complicated transportation network. Add a railroad, overpasses, underpasses, flyovers, bypasses and multiple levels of roadway, and what was once a recognizable cloverleaf began to look more like a bowl of spaghetti.
There may not be a clearer parallel to healthcare.
Healthcare once seemed considerably easier to navigate. You had insurance or you didn't. Maybe you had Medicare. The options were limited, and understanding what was covered and where to receive care was often more straightforward.
Today, patients and caregivers encounter Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans, Medicaid programs, waiver programs, long-term care, managed care, APD, CMS, supplemental insurance and countless individual plan requirements. Then add authorizations, documentation, network requirements and eligibility guidelines.
Suddenly, you're staring at that same bowl of spaghetti.
Durable medical equipment can add another interchange. A patient may need a wheelchair, hospital bed, bathroom safety equipment, respiratory equipment, incontinence supplies or another product that can help them remain safe and independent at home. But obtaining the right equipment can require coordination among physicians, case managers, health plans, caregivers and DME providers.
Knowing where you're going is one thing. Knowing which ramp will actually get you there is another.
